Nadal Huge Favorite for 2017 French Open

2017 French Open qualifying is under way but the real action at Roland Garros begins this Sunday, May 28. And the favorite to win this year’s tournament, Rafael Nadal, is no stranger to victory in Paris. The Spaniard, who is seeking his 15th Grand Slam title, comes in at -125 French Open odds ($ 125 wins $ 100) while defending champion Novak Djokovic is a second pick with a +300 line.

Last season was a disastrous one for Rafael Nadal as he won just two titles and failed to make it past the fourth round in the three majors he entered. Nadal, who for years looked invincible at Roland Garros – winning the tournament nine times between 2005 and 2014, also turned in a career worst performance at the French Open thanks a third round defeat at the hands fellow countryman Marcel Granollers.

Nadal appears to have turned the page on 2016, though, as this year has featured a return to form for the 30 year old. He has already surpassed last season’s win total by securing titles in Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Madrid and he found his way to the championship match at the Australian Open, marking his best performance in a major since winning the 2014 French Open.

Given his history in Paris and his current level of play, Nadal makes perfect sense as the favorite and even a heavy one.

Could 2017 French Open be the Year for Djokovic

As for Djokovic, his 2017 campaign has been a forgettable one, at least in comparison to the standard he set the past few seasons. The Serbian has just one title thus far and he was dismissed in the second round of the Australian Open, a tournament he won five times between 2011 and 2016.

Still, Djokovic is a force to be reckoned with, having played in nine of the last 12 Grand Slam finals, including last year’s French Open where he bested Andy Murray in four sets to claim his first Roland Garros title.

Murray, who stills owns the ATP’s top men’s singles ranking, is a third on Bovada’s 2017 French Open odds list at +900. Murray is chasing his first French Open championship and his fourth major title.  He appeared in his first Roland Garros final last year after reaching the semifinals in 2014 and 2015.

Rounding out Bovada’s top five 2017 French Open favorites are Dominic Thiem and Stan Wawrinka at +900 and +1000 odds, respectively. Absent from the list is Roger Federer, who has elected to sit out this year’s clay court season.
